Anal Manometry
Anal manometry is a test that measures the pressure within the gastrointestinal tract, specifically the rectum and anal canal. A catheter with pressure sensors is inserted to record muscle contractions and relaxation. In addition to evaluating sphincter strength and coordination, the test also measures rectal sensation by gently inflating a small balloon at the tip of the catheter. This allows clinicians to assess how the rectum senses filling, including the thresholds for first sensation, urge, and maximum tolerable volume. Together, these measurements help diagnose motility disorders and provide a comprehensive assessment of anorectal function.
When performed with the THD® Anopress, the evaluation offers several advantages. The Anopress system uses a compact, handheld pressure‑mapping device that provides real‑time, high‑resolution pressure profiles without the need for traditional water‑perfused catheters. Its design allows for a quicker, more comfortable test, often without the need for extensive preparation. The device captures both resting and squeeze pressures with excellent reproducibility, making it useful for baseline assessment, post‑treatment monitoring, and longitudinal follow‑up. Because the Anopress is portable and easy to set up, it enables efficient workflow in both clinic and procedural settings while maintaining high diagnostic accuracy.
